On San Francisco’s southeastern waterfront, Heron’s Head Park hosts nesting avocets, nature education programs, and the seeds of a revitalized city Bay shore.
This small oasis was once intended to be a new shipping pier for the Port of San Francisco. When that deal went south, 5,000 tons of debris were cleared away to make way for picnic areas, hiking paths and spreading stands of native wetland vegetation, and.a slough was dug to increase the size of the bordering salt marsh.
The group Literacy for Environmental Justice hosts hands-on environmental education programs at the park for school-aged youth, and coordinates restoration efforts of community volunteers.Port of San Francisco’s site for this park.
