At this Park

599 acre Park managed by: East Bay Regional Park District

This unique ecological island supports rare isolated specimens of flora and fauna, and is also a Native American archaeological treasure — featuring mortar holes, occasional flints and arrowheads, and faint pictographs.

The preserve’s highlights include the namesake caves (really erosion depressions in large rock outcrops), unusual species of fairy shrimp and rare amphibians that depend on water that collects in eroded depressions in the rock, and, most remarkably, ancient and sacred Native American pictographs.
