Lakeside Chat #39 with Jim Ervin – Nutrients in San Francisco Bay

Friday, February 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“Nutrients are essential to life. But, too much nutrient can cause big problems in the environment. … Consider this: Each human excretes roughly 4.6 kg of nitrogen (N) and 0.6 kg of phosphorus (P) per year. With the population in the Bay Area now over 7.5 million, that adds up to a lot of N and P. How are wastewater treatment plants treating this nutrient waste? How much is in the Bay now? How much is too much? What should be done?”. Register for this Lakeside Chat here.

Jim Ervin retired after 27 years of service at the San Jose – Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility, the largest and most advanced treatment plant in San Francisco Bay. Since around 2016, he has assisted UC Davis monthly fish monitoring surveys in Lower South SF Bay. His blogs describing Bay biota are posted at the UC Davis OG Fish Lab website: https://www.ogfishlab.com
