Save Mount Diablo
Save Mount Diablo (SMD) is a nationally accredited land trust and conservation organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Save Mount Diablo has been preserving lands on and around Mount Diablo and educating the public about the mountain’s natural values since 1971. SMD is a tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
We are on a time-sensitive land conservation mission. We are biologists, conservationists, hikers, bikers, equestrians, bird watchers, and people who just love to look at the mountain. This is our home. Preserving natural land forever will mean safeguarding our quality of life, including our air, water, and views. Only half of Mount Diablo has been preserved. The other half of the mountain, over 70,000 acres, is privately owned and still threatened by development. That means risking the loss of wildlife corridors, ecosystems and recreational opportunities.
Save Mount Diablo is working to preserve, defend, and restore the remaining 70,000 acres on Mount Diablo and its foothills for wildlife and people to enjoy. Save Mount Diablo envisions a permanently protected natural reserve in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, with the peak of Mount Diablo at its heart. We are working to secure large portions of this habitat to be preserved as parkland, and our vision also includes private lands shielded by conservation easements. We endeavor to keep free from development the Mount Diablo core area and to preserve specific areas that have major wildlife, recreational, scenic and scientific values.
