Summer 2015

Bay Nature’s July-September 2015 issue moves from the shores of Point Reyes to the East Bay hills and then up into the sky over the Pacific. In our cover story, Audubon Canyon Ranch’s director of conservation science John Kelly and wildlife biologist Jules Evens chronicle the mighty and swift return of wildlife to Tomales Bay in West Marin since the restoration of its wetlands in 2008. On the other side of the Point Reyes peninsula geologist Doris Sloan “reads” the many rock formations at Kehoe Beach for our On The Trail feature. With mountain biker and open space advocate Austin McInerny leading the ride, writer Greg Fisher explores bike-friendly trails in the East Bay Regional Park District. Environmental researcher Lester Rowntree explains why torrential rainstorms—driven by atmospheric rivers from the tropics—may be the new normal in the Bay Area. The issue also includes: new plant pathogens, an interview with up-and-coming climate scientist Daniel Swain, why migrating birds get lost, and how to see the summer’s showiest meteor shower.
