Spring 2024

Dos Rios Ranch State Park, near Modesto, Calif., painted by G Yang

Springtime: let’s go to the park! Specifically, California’s first new state park in 15 years, Dos Rios Ranch. The parks director calls it “a park of the future,” and Dos Rios has a lot to do—including for Indigenous people. We go hiking with the super-inclusive 510 Hikers, and we meet up with people who care for needy bats. We profile four special Local Hero Award winners. We go out to a new Napa preserve that’s cultivating a stewardship culture. Plus: the public spaces that our cemeteries afford us, radical nature embroidery, the greenest of beetles, and why plants cry (in a way).
