The larger of the two Sindicich Lagoons anchors this pastoral scene at Briones Regional Park on a sunny spring day as the twin summits of Mount Diablo loom beyond. Most East Bay ponds are not natural—they were built for the cattle that still graze thousands of acres here. But they have become valuable habitat for countless insects, amphibians, waterfowl, and other wildlife.
